City of Cape Town backs Speed Classic Cape Town

With less than seven weeks to go before the Speed Classic Cape Town, excitement is ramping up for the Mother City’s first hill climb in more than 60 years. The City of Cape Town pledged its support to the Speed Classic at a media launch on Table Mountain yesterday.

The Speed Classic Cape Town will transform Philip Kgosana Drive into a 1,8 km stretch of pure motorsport adrenaline, a twisting climb with 150 metres of elevation over two days next month.

Set against the iconic backdrop of Table Mountain, the motorsport festival will see over 140 historic cars, racing cars and supercars take on the sloping route on one of Cape Town’s historic roads.

Inspired by the world-renowned spectacles such as the UK’s Goodwood Festival of Speed and the American Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the Speed Classic Cape Town will be the first hill climb held in the Mother City since 1962.

The City, through its Events support process, is backing the Speed Classic Cape Town and will also be providing logistical as well as safety support to the event.

‘Speed Classic Cape Town is going to be one of the most thrilling motorsports events ever staged in our city, and Capetonians are in for two days of unmatched entertainment and excitement. When you combine the exhilaration of the various classes of hillclimb cars, the unmatched passion of Cape Town’s motorsport fans, and one of the most iconic and recognisable backdrops in the whole world, the result can only be incredible. We are proud to support Speed Classic Cape Town, and I hope to see Capetonians out in numbers for our city’s first hill climb race in over six decades,’ said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

In collaboration with the event organiser, the City’s Events Permit Office is currently finalising the permit for the event. 

‘This is an event that has been in the works for some time, and we are thrilled it is close to realisation. Cape Town has a proud, long-standing motorsport culture, and the City is always keen to support it to ensure this culture continues to thrive by creating platforms that encourage its growth. The Speed Classic Cape Town adds to a thriving motorsport ecosystem that already generates around R350 million annually while supporting a wide-reaching industry and thousands of jobs in manufacturing, trading, servicing, repairs, parts, and accessories. Additionally, the City’s Events Coordinating Committee has been working with the event organiser for months to ensure all the necessary plans and logistical arrangements are in place for a successful inaugural event,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The Speed Classic Cape Town will take place on 25 and 26 October 2025.
